A meeting was held at the Kyrgyz Republic's Ombudsman Institute (Akıykatchı) with the official delegation of the European Parliament.

The delegation of European Parliament members, headed by the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, Mounir Satouri, was welcomed by representatives of the Institute, along with Deputy Ombudsmen Zhanibek Zhorobaev and Aichurok Nazaralieva.

The parties discussed the protection of human rights and freedoms.

In particular, they exchanged views on the importance of safeguarding freedom of speech, the right to peaceful assembly, as well as the protection of women's and children's rights from violence.

Furthermore, they addressed the challenges and trends in preventing early marriages.

Deputy Ombudsman Zhanibek Zhorobaev shared the Institute's work on human rights protection through the reception and review of citizens' complaints, conducting monitoring and inspections of state institutions to prevent legal violations.

He also highlighted the Institute's efforts in improving legislation and international cooperation.

He emphasized that the number of appeals to the Institute from citizens is increasing, indicating growing trust in the Ombudsman.

“The Ombudsman Institute regularly conducts monitoring of human rights compliance, including the right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence. We also draw the attention of state authorities to violations of citizens' rights identified during monitoring. Protection of vulnerable groups is a special focus for Akıykatchı,” said Zhanibek Zhorobaev.

Zhorobaev pointed out to the European Parliament delegation the importance of cooperation between the Ombudsman Institute and the Kyrgyz Parliament.

“Currently, members of the Jogorku Kenesh have initiated a constitutional law project on the Ombudsman, which will be an important step towards granting the Institute 'A' status,” Zhorobaev said.

The head of the delegation, Chairman of the European Parliament Subcommittee on Human Rights Mounir Satouri, thanked the Institute for organizing the meeting and providing detailed information on the human rights situation in the Kyrgyz Republic.

“We hope that the constitutional draft law on the Ombudsman will be adopted and will provide more opportunities for fulfilling your important mission,” said Mounir Satouri.
